How thoughtful design turned an overlooked garden pond into a beautiful water feature that can be enjoyed from the comfort of the bedroom.

Project Location: Elstree & Borehamwood, Hertfordshire

This small garden pond transformation took place in Elstree & Borehamwood, Hertfordshire. Our team at Quintal Water Garden replaced an existing, poorly positioned pond with a

beautiful 2m × 1.5m ecosystem pond and natural stream, designed to maximise the available space and create a stunning view from inside the home.

Making Better Use of a Small Garden

Not every garden has room for a large pond, but that doesn't mean you have to compromise on creating a beautiful water feature.

When we first visited this garden, there was a small 1.5m × 1m pond tucked away in a flower bed. Although it provided a home for the fish, its position meant it could barely be seen from the main viewing points inside the house, including the kitchen and bedroom.

The client wanted something more attractive, natural-looking and, most importantly, a pond they could actually enjoy from inside their home.

Our solution was to fill in the existing pond and create a new 2m × 1.5m ecosystem pond, complete with a natural stream, carefully positioned to make the most of the available space.

Overcoming the Challenges

As with many garden projects, the biggest challenges were hidden beneath the surface.

The area chosen for the new pond contained two large pine tree stumps, both of which had to be removed before construction could begin.

With no access for machinery, there was only one option: good old-fashioned hard work!

Both stumps had to be excavated and removed by hand. It was a physically demanding part of the installation, but essential to creating the space needed for the new pond.

Restricted access also influenced our choice of materials. Rather than using large, heavy boulders, we opted for rustic slate stone, which is particularly well suited to smaller ecosystem ponds.

Why Rustic Slate Is Perfect for Small Ponds

One of the biggest considerations when designing a small pond is making the most of the available water volume.

Large rocks can take up a surprising amount of space below the waterline, reducing the swimming area available for fish.

Rustic slate offers a fantastic alternative.

Its natural, relatively flat shape allows us to construct attractive, almost vertical rock walls without sacrificing too much space inside the pond.

This approach offers several advantages:

  • Maximises water volume within a compact footprint.

  • Creates natural-looking rock formations and pond edges.

  • Provides a beautiful textured appearance.

  • Allows us to work effectively in gardens with restricted access.

The result is a pond that feels natural and established while providing as much usable water space as possible.

A Pond Designed Around the View

For us, designing a garden pond isn't just about how it looks when you're standing next to it. It's also about how it connects with the house and how the client will experience it every day.

With this project, positioning was everything.

We carefully

located the new pond along the side of the garden, ensuring that both the pond and its gently flowing stream could be enjoyed from the bedroom.

In fact, the client can now enjoy the sight and sound of the water feature while lying in bed!

It's a small design detail that makes a huge difference to how the garden is experienced.

Instead of an almost invisible pond hidden in a flower bed, the new water feature has become a focal point that can be appreciated throughout the day.

Bringing the Garden to Life After Dark

A beautiful pond shouldn't disappear when the sun goes down.

We incorporated underwater lighting into the design, carefully positioning the lights to illuminate the rocks, moving water and stream.

As evening falls, the lighting completely transforms the feature, highlighting the natural textures of the slate and the gentle movement of the water.

The result is a peaceful, relaxing atmosphere that can be enjoyed from the bedroom without even stepping outside.

It's one of our favourite aspects of this project and a perfect example of how lighting can add another dimension to a garden water feature.

A Better Home for the Fish

Of course, the transformation wasn't just about appearance.

The original pond was quite small, so we wanted to ensure the existing fish would benefit from the upgrade too.

The new pond provides a larger swimming area, and we also incorporated a dedicated fish cave, giving the fish a sheltered place to retreat, hide and feel secure.

By carefully balancing the rockwork with the available water space, we've created an attractive ecosystem pond that works for both the garden owners and its aquatic residents.

The Finished Result

What was once a tiny, barely visible pond has become a beautiful natural water feature, complete with a flowing stream, rustic slate rockwork and atmospheric evening lighting.

Despite the challenges of restricted access and removing two substantial tree stumps by hand, the finished pond fits naturally into the garden and makes excellent use of the limited space.

Most importantly, the client is absolutely over the moon with the transformation, and the fish are enjoying their new, more spacious home.

This project in Elstree & Borehamwood demonstrates that you don't need a huge garden to enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of a natural ecosystem pond. Sometimes, it's simply about making the most of the space you have.
