Creating bespoke water features that suit any space is something we truly enjoy, and this recent project in Hanwell, London was a perfect example. The homeowner reached out wanting to enhance a quiet border area in their well-designed garden, which already included a swimming pool, hot tub, and even a small pub/bar. They felt a garden water feature would be the perfect finishing touch.
Although the available space was small—around 5 metres long and 2.5 metres wide—it proved once again that a small garden water feature design can transform even the tightest corner. The area, located beneath a large conifer, offered just the right backdrop for something natural and calming.
From First Call to 3D Water Feature Design
During the initial phone call, we discussed the client’s ideas for a pond-free water feature that would bring movement and sound to the space without overwhelming it. We followed this with an on-site consultation in Hanwell, where we explored different concepts together.
Once we had a clear vision, we produced a 3D animated design, which is a huge help for our clients. It allows them to picture exactly how the garden water feature will look before any work begins.
After receiving the go-ahead, we scheduled the installation and got to work.
Installing the Water Feature
The build took just a few days. We installed two large curved stacked-slate walls—a popular choice for stacked slate water features thanks to their modern, natural look. At the centre, we added a fountain bowl spilling into a short stream, creating a soothing flow of water and a beautiful focal point.
To support the ecosystem, we planted the fountain bowl with aquatic plants, improving both appearance and filtration. We also added an Autodoser, which automatically introduces beneficial bacteria to keep water clear—a great option for anyone looking for low-maintenance water feature installation in London.
Since this is a pond-free system, the water collects in an underground reservoir when switched off. Being kept in the dark reduces algae growth, helping maintain excellent water quality.
While finishing up, we also planted the surrounding border to match the look and feel of the garden. Everything tied together beautifully, and we were thrilled with the final result.
A Bonus Water Feature by the Hot Tub
During our consultation, I noticed a small raised flower bed beside the hot tub and mentioned that it would be the perfect spot for a Stacked Slate Sphere. The client instantly agreed—so we installed that feature as well.It adds a striking visual element and provides a calming sound while relaxing in the hot tub.
